Hassle-free packaging under the new EU regulations (PPWR & EUDR): How Akarton helps you

You have undoubtedly come across the abbreviations: PPWR and EUDR. The European Union is setting increasingly strict requirements for packaging to reduce its environmental impact and combat deforestation. We understand that this raises questions for you as a business owner. Does my packaging still comply? Will I have to deal with extra paperwork? At Akarton BV, we have already done our homework. In this blog, we explain how we take the burden off your shoulders, so you can continue to focus on your product.

PPWR: Ready for the future with 'Design for Recycling'

The new European Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR) sets strict requirements regarding material use, recyclability, chemical substances, and information provision.

Because we at Akarton primarily produce corrugated cardboard packaging and work with water-based inks and adhesives, our products naturally align perfectly with the core principles of this legislation. In addition, we continuously optimize our packaging according to the principles of Design for Recycling. With us, you are therefore assured of future-proof packaging.

To ensure the right documentation is always at hand, support our customers in the best possible way, and demonstrate full compliance with the regulations, we have a comprehensive package of product and compliance declarations available. We closely monitor European guidelines and update our documentation immediately whenever new standards are introduced.

Depending on your product and application, we can quickly provide the following documents for you:

  • PPWR, REACH & Product Compliance Declaration
  • Regulatory Compliance Statement
  • PFAS Declaration, REACH & SVHC Declaration, and Heavy Metals Declaration
  • Recyclability Declaration & Sustainability Factsheet
  • Food Safety Self-Declaration (if applicable)
  • FSC®, ISO 9001, and ISO 14001 certificates, and our EcoVadis Platinum Scorecard

EUDR: No administrative hassle for your webshop

We also have our processes fully in order for the European Deforestation Regulation (EUDR). Akarton purchases corrugated cardboard exclusively from reliable suppliers within the European Union.

Based on current guidelines, Akarton qualifies as a downstream operator within the EUDR chain. This means that the primary due diligence obligations lie with the parties before us (the upstream operators). We ensure a waterproof administrative record of our suppliers and customers and retain this data in accordance with legal requirements.

What does this mean for you? Very simple: For customers who use our packaging to package their own products, there are generally no additional EUDR obligations for the packaging itself. You therefore run no risk of unexpected administrative obligations. Naturally, we will continue to monitor developments and inform you immediately should anything change in the supply chain.

Working together on truly sustainable packaging

For Akarton, sustainability is about much more than just ticking the boxes of laws and regulations. We continuously invest in quality, environmental management, and absolute transparency within our supply chain.

For example, we are proud to operate CO₂-neutrally for our Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions (monitored according to the GHG Protocol), and we hold the coveted EcoVadis Platinum medal and FSC® Chain of Custody certification. Together with you and our suppliers, we are working on packaging solutions that not only comply with the latest legislation but also genuinely contribute to a circular economy.
