Sustainable corrugated cardboard packaging

Corrugated cardboard is a widely used material for sustainable packaging. It is strong, relatively light and can be recycled. But the material is not the only thing that decides how sustainable packaging is. The design also plays a role. By matching the packaging to the product and the application, unnecessary use of material and space can be limited.

Akarton develops and produces sustainable corrugated cardboard packaging for different sectors and applications. From custom packaging for specific products to solutions for higher production volumes.

Which sustainable cardboard packaging does Akarton make?

Akarton develops and produces different types of sustainable corrugated cardboard packaging.

With custom work, we develop packaging that is specifically designed for your product, application and production process. We also offer Hexpand packaging, a flexible corrugated cardboard packaging that adapts well to different product shapes and dimensions.

Regular slotted boxes (RSC) are the well-known cardboard shipping boxes and are suitable for many different products and applications. We also offer shelf ready packaging: packaging that is not only suitable for transport, but can be placed on the shelf directly after delivery.

Suitable packaging for every sector

Sustainable packaging does not look the same for every product. An e-commerce company has different requirements than a producer in industry or a company in the food sector. We develop packaging that fits the product, the application and the way the packaging is processed, stored and transported.

E-commerce

A parcel goes through several steps before it reaches the customer. Good packaging protects the product and is also practical for storage and order processing. By matching the size and design to the product, unnecessary space and material can also be limited.

Food

Food packaging must fit the product and the way it is processed, stored and transported. The packaging must protect the product well and be practical to use. The packaging is matched to the specific application and the conditions within the supply chain.

Medical applications

Medical products need packaging that fits the specific application. The packaging must protect the product well during storage, processing and transport.

Industry

Industrial products differ greatly in size, weight and fragility. That requires packaging that is designed for this and offers enough protection during storage and transport.

Logistics

In logistics processes, efficiency and protection are important. Dimensions, stackability and use of space play a role in storing and transporting products. By including these factors in the design from the start, you get packaging that fits the logistics process well.

Sustainable cardboard packaging

Cardboard packaging is not automatically sustainable. The total impact depends on several factors, such as the use of material, the composition of the cardboard, the way the packaging is produced and how it can be recycled after use.

Corrugated cardboard is widely used for packaging because it is strong, relatively light and recyclable. By matching the design and execution to the product, we can look at the amount of material needed to protect the product well. This way, well-designed packaging can help to use material and space efficiently.

Akarton only develops and produces corrugated cardboard packaging. We look at the product, the application and the production and logistics process to arrive at suitable packaging.

From custom work to large runs

Do you need specific packaging for a product, or are you looking for a solution for higher production volumes? Akarton has a production site for both situations.

Venlo, the Netherlands

From our headquarters in Venlo, we focus on niche production, custom work and small to medium-sized runs. Thanks to short lines of communication, we can act quickly and adapt packaging to the specific requirements of your product and production process.

Schüttorf, Germany

For higher volumes, Akarton has a new production site in Schüttorf. Here, the focus is on large-scale, fast and predictable production, with a capacity of up to 800 boxes per minute.

How Akarton puts sustainability into practice

Sustainability goes further than only the material of the packaging. In design, production and transport, we also look for ways to use material and raw materials as efficiently as possible.

Recycled material

Akarton uses at least 83% recycled material in its packaging, with the goal of increasing this percentage further. This way, a large part of the cardboard needed is used again as raw material.

Renewable energy

We also look at the use of energy in production. Among other things, Akarton uses more than 500 solar panels to generate renewable energy. In addition, the gas consumption is offset.

Certifications and guidelines

Akarton works with certifications and guidelines that contribute to responsible use of material and corporate social responsibility. For example, we work with FSC for responsibly managed forestry. For corporate social responsibility, Akarton follows the guidelines of ISO 26000.

Efficient production in Schüttorf

At the new production site in Schüttorf, the supply of corrugated cardboard is directly linked to the processing at the same site. This removes road transport between the producer and the processor. This means fewer links and transport movements in the production process, and also shorter lead times and lower logistics costs.
